In the age of social media and the internet, meeting a partner anywhere in the world is possible with the push of a button. But that also means people have an easier time finding ways to sneak around their loved ones, whether emotional messaging or physical meet-ups.
Where do we cross the line with our partners, and what defines cheating in the digital age? Here are some basic answers:
Is talking, in person or online, to someone who is the partner's sexual preference cheating?
It’s complicated. Obviously, context is needed for individual situations. But if someone is mad simply for their partner having friends and communicating with someone, it’s pretty obviously not cheating and should say a lot about the trust in the relationship.
My partner is on a dating app. Does that count as cheating?
Well, yes! Usually, this means they are going behind your back with this one, even if it's to spy on the competition. The only way this could be valid is if it was an old profile they never deleted (which, let’s face it, is usually a way people lie about this). If they are looking behind your back, it's not worth it.
My partner likes other people’s “sexy” photos on IG; what do I do?
This isn’t cheating, but you need to talk. Let’s be honest: sometimes you like whatever is on your feed. But if your partner is a constant offender of this content and you're uncomfortable with it, you both need to have a conversation. Your feelings matter.
Is it cheating to be friends with an Ex?
No, if there is clear communication. Many people choose to be amicable with an ex after the relationship, even right after it ends. But if your partner chooses not to let you know their best mate is their ex-flame, they might be more secretive than you’d want them to be.
Is it cheating to touch someone who is not your partner physically?
Depends on how“touchy." An arm around your best friend for a photo is one thing, but cuddling with someone is another.
Moral of the story: Communicate with your partner, and you’ll see what they consider cheating and what they don’t.
